The "Run-Down": Cottonwood Beach MS Invitational

It was a beautiful day down at Cottonwood Beach for our very own invitational. Thanks to Washougal River CrossFit, we were ready to hand out ribbons to the fastest five girls and fastest five guys. There was only one trophy, though, and it would get to go to the school with the lowest combined team score. We knew we had a great shot at winning several ribbons and that trophy. The performance of our girls boosted our hopes even more. Seventh grader Elle Thomas (11:48) showed she wasn’t joking at Nike as she won her first race. Right behind her was eighth grader Sydnee Boothby (11:54) with classmate Chloe Johnson (12:00) hot on her heels. The team relied on seventh grader Jamie Maas to finish our 1st through 4th place sweep. Seventh grader Danica Stinchfield (12:53) waltzed across the line in 8th place to establish our scoring five and produced an incredible score of just 18 points. Our amazing “Z” Girls (Katie Zillman and Claire Zakcovics) both bettered their time from the Nike meet a few days before, while Audrey Grice almost matched her time from Nike. This is quite a feat as our course is traditionally 10-15 seconds slower due to the sand and the zigzag path coming off the dike. A special accomplishment by Ava Rana, who also nearly matched her Nike time, needs to be noted as she completed the course without having to stop! This was something that she did not think was possible earlier in the season. Way to go, Ava!

With the girls winning by over 50 points, the other boys teams needed to pull off a miracle to catch the Panthers. Eighth grader Trey Keyser (11:07) managed a solid 2nd place with no one else around, while seventh grader Samuel Grice (11:25) had to rely on his finishing kick to steal 3rd place.  Rumor has it the Washougal police have a warrant out for his arrest. The next panther across the line was eighth grader Alex Holden (12:03) in 10th place. Twenty seconds behind him came two more Panthers like the cavalry: classmate Blake Mattern and seventh grader Keagan Payne. This put all of our five scorers in the top 17 places.  Beating or getting close to their Nike times were Vince Dayley, Ethan Perry, Tanner Hopkins, Dawson Sprinkle, and Alex Ognianov. The Panther boys won the team scoring competition to give the combined team a totally “Run Away” victory. This was an awesome performance from both the boys and the girls that made for a great birthday present for Coach Lowman one day early.
