Dylan Croeni had never beaten WF West's Dakota Parker in a dozen or so attempts. As Dylan was leading the 2A state most of the season, Dakota posted a phenomenal, yet suspicious time of 15:16 the previous week, besting Dylan's best by 12 seconds. Should Dylan be concerned? At the District Meet, Dakota blitzed to a 15 or so second lead in the first mile. Should Dylan be concerned? Dylan edged up only 5 seconds in the second mile? Should Dylan be concerned? Dylan maintained his pace, wagering that Dakota would fade the last mile. With 600 to go, Dylan caught Dakota. Now Dakota is concerned! Dylan's amazing finish overtook Dakota by 9 seconds. Another day, another course record for Croeni (15:57.68).
One of the famous lines in the Movie "Running Brave" was made by Billy Mills' coach regarding his kick in the Olympic 10,000 meters, after earlier in the movie making a comment that Billy did not have one. Taneal Tanner has never been known for her kick. The day after watching Billy Mills' finish, she flew around the last corner and found something extra, impressively passing 3 girls from other schools (two from Hockinson) in the last few hundred meters. Taneal's performance of 22:46 on a sloppy course was 5 seconds faster than last year, and ranks among one of her finest races of all time. Her effort placed her 23rd, well ahead of many gals better than her at the start of her memorable senior year.
