"The Team that Plays Together...

Preys Together!" The saying “The Family that prays together, stays together.” has been around a long time. So we are going to look at a twist on this quote as it is found in the sea-dwelling mammal community.

Dolphins are heralded as the most intelligent creatures in the sea. In fact some believe that they rival and possibly pass that of humans. The jury is still out on that issue in my book. I grew up watching the show Flipper: Flipper (0:00-1:06)

Ocean scientists have come to the conclusion that Dolphins like to have fun. They like to have fun with each other. Check out this footage of them having fun: Dolphins Play (All)

Having “play time” together increases the enthusiasm and commitment to other members in the group such that the “work time” becomes more productive. Let’s see how the Dolphins pull that off. Dolphins Work (All)

So these mammals play together and then they work (in this case ‘prey’) together very effectively. Their cousins the Killer Whales use different tactics of teamwork to round up their prey: Killer Whales (All)

These mammals of the seas approach playing and working with the same mindset: TOGETHER!

But let’s go one step further. “Make your work your play and your play your work.” is one of my favorite quotes from NBA Coaching legend Phil Jackson. When we can package our workouts in a “candy-coated wrapper,” the results can be amazing.

“Chose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Confucius. So if we are wise enough (or naïve enough), we can do as Isaac Stinchfield did and convince ourselves that we love what we are doing. But that should be the case for all the “hard work” (quality days) that we engage in, as we know it is what will make us great and prepare us to reach our goals. Blurring the lines between work and play can bring about awesome results. So embrace the challenges in life so that we prepare to reach our goals. And to put the finishing touches on your activities, do so with your team in an ultra-cooperative environment.
