The "Run-Down": Woodland/Hockinson

Is it ever not windy in Woodland? I think the name change of “Windland” should be considered. But the wind, along with the human opponents, were not able to stop the Panther boys from extending their league winning streak to 23 and the girls to 7.

With the Woodland boys missing a few key boys, the Panthers notched another comfortable win in spite of being less than full strength.  The score against the Beavers was 24-35, and we also took the “W” against the Hockinson crew 25-32. It was senior Jackson Keyser’s first race back after an August appendectomy. It was good to see him out on the course again, as we watch him vastly improve this next month. He was our 6th runner, and with the five guys (no hamburger jokes, please) in front of him capturing half of the top dozen spots between the 3 teams, it was a solid Panther performance. Freshman Trey Keyser and senior Hayden Stinchfield battled it out the last 10 meters for third place – both notching new “Black Course” P.R.’s at 18:38.7 and 18:39.1. We had two other boys claim new “Black Course” records: freshman Blake Mattern (19:25.8) and sophomore Jacob Streuli (19:51).

The Panther Girls were able to back down after we realized that Hockinson star Ally Peterson opted to not adorn a uniform, as she was focused on the Nike meet in a couple of days. The scores for the girls tallied in at 17-42 with the Beavers and 23-32 against the Hawks.  Freshman Sydnee Boothby waltzed through her first High School win with a “Black Course” P.R. of 20:41.8, and classmate Daya Sathyaraj (24:36.2) was the only other girl with a “Black Course” P.R. in spite of having lower leg issues that significantly slowed her down. Sophomore Savea Mansfield made second place look easy, and junior Meryl Keeler looked super strong through a majority of her race. A super kick from senior Clara Best was enough to catch Hockinson’s 4th runner, but was just shy of catching the top Woodland girl as she literally ran into her in the finish chute.

Our next meet will be with the Spudders of Ridgefield at good ole Abrams Park. Like last year, we will have an Ice Cream social with them after the racing is over.
