The "Run-Down": Mark Morris and Columbia River @ Home

Home sweet home. At least for our seniors. Since this was our only home meet of the year, it was Senior Recognition day and the seniors rose to the occasion.

All the girls ran in one race. Senior Amelia Pullen decided to do her normal thing and break another course record. This time, it happened to be her own course record that she broke. Her time of 19:30 was 18 seconds faster than her effort from last year. The rest of her team ran well enough for the Panthers to hand the Columbia River girls their second and largest loss of the season. Freshman Savea Mansfield placed a comfortable 3rd place and the remaining scorers (Brooklyn Bausch, Meryl Keeler and Paige Maas) packed themselves into places 5, 6 and 7. Another highlight came from junior Clara Best (24:13) as she used her 400 meter speed to kick past two C.R. girls in the last 100 meters to thrill the crowd.

The final score was 22 to 34 in favor of the Panthers. Mark Morris also had a few runners in the race, but not enough to receive a team score. The girls wrapped up their league dual meet season on a 4 meet win streak and an overall record of 5 wins to just one loss.

Just like the girls, all the boys ran in one race. That gave us 65 runners to watch from the three different schools. Senior Gabriel Dinnel decided to match Amelia’s feat by breaking the course record for boys. His time of 16:23 undercut Hockinson’s Kyle Peterson’s time from 2016 by 19 seconds. In that race, Gabriel (as a sophomore) managed 2nd place to the senior now running for Montana. Another senior Troy Prince-Butterfield (17:25) took advantage of the senior day and pulled away from the pack by running 20 seconds faster than the prior year on this course. Classmate Koy Chaston edged out senior Ian Palmer to give our seniors a 1 through 4 finish. Sophomore  Jonathan Wells waltzed across the line in 5th and our two varsity juniors Jackson Keyser and Caden Lowman edged out the top Columbia River guy to give us a perfect score of 15 to 50. Caden’s “come from behind” maneuver was enough to earn him Runner of the Week. Senior Warren Henderson walked away from Cottonwood beach knowing he ran his best race of the year… so far! One more senior that ran a superb race was Samson Figueroa, who nearly matched his time from Nike!

The boys end their league dual meet season with a pair of perfect scores (Mark Morris had a team out there on the course as well). They brought our season record to a perfect 6-0 for the third year in a row. Our winning streak now stands at an even 20.

The most memorable facet of the event may have been all the Senior Posters that the parents surprised us with, as 16 of them were posted around the finish chute. It was an amazing site.

Our next race is on Friday in nine days at Champoeg Park. This race is our unofficial kick-off of the championship season.
