The "Run-Down": Hockinson/Woodland @ Alderbrook Park

It has been five years since the Panthers have raced at Alderbrook Park, the location of Hockinson’s home meets. It is a beautiful place. Not a lot has changed, but the course did such that a large hill was a new big thing to get up and over two times during the race. This new obstacle makes this course the “blackest” in our league and of the courses we run on this year.

Since the MS results have not been posted yet, that portion of the Run-Down will be updated later on… Sorry L. So check back in a few days.

With the Panther boys running extra on Varsity and the Hockinson team moving some varsity runners down, the Future Varsity team did have a race on their hands. Senior Trenton Lowe made his season debut in style with a time faster than any he had last year. Considering the course, that was an amazing feat. He finished 8th as three Panthers just ahead of him guided him through the finish chute. Those three were junior Hayden Stinchfield, senior Jack Olson and sophomore Ted West. Sophomore Sage Morris decided to run faster than at Ultimook and followed him to the finish a few strides behind for the Panther scores grabbed 5th through 9th. Freshman Lucas Santon showed he is improving rapidly as he also ran faster than at Ultimook. He had the only “Black P.R.” of the day!!!

Our varsity girls ran next. That big hill on the course? Well, it didn’t seem to slow down senior Amelia Pullen too much. She smashed the course record (only used one other time) by almost 4 minutes! The slowest course of the year and she runs 19:20. Considering the difficulty, it is safe to say that this was probably her best performance. And she made it look easy. Freshman Savea Mansfield managed a solid third place finish, not far from Hockinson’s district runner-up from last year, Allyson Peterson. Allyson’s Hawk teammates put on an impressive show that was enough to hand the Panther girls the first league loss of the season 24-34, and only our second loss in the past three seasons. Another highlight for the Panthers came from sophomore Meryl Keeler as she moved up to runner number 3 this week.

In the varsity boys race, the Hawks came out charging! As we were holding back on the throttle, near the half-way point we needed to chase down a few more Hawks. Sophomore Jonathan Wells and senior Ian Palmer got that assignment. In a matter of 400 meters, they past 3-4 Hawks thus turning a closely contested meet in to a comfortable victory. Jonathan and Ian finish just ahead of the first Hawk supplemented the efforts of seniors Gabriel Dinnel and Koy Chaston for a 1-4 sweep. Another senior posted a fine performance while getting a rare varsity assignment; Andrew McElhaney placed 14th of the three teams, just getting edged out by Woodland’s #2 guy. The boys league meet win streak has been extended to 17!

Friday morning the Varsity quads head off to Idaho for the prestigious Bob Firman invitational. There will be some of the finest teams and individuals from the west coast at this meet!
